Locality: Paola
Paola is a small town situated in the south eastern part of the island. The town got its name after its founder, Grandmaster Anotine de Paule.Right in the very heart of Paola stands its huge parish church, which is the biggest on the island) dedicated to Christ the King. The town has two annual feasts – one dedicated to Christ the King and the other to Our Lady of Lourdes. Paola features two more churches, as well as the only mosque on the entire island. Paola’s main attraction however is the Hypogeum, which is more than 5000 years old. The hypogeum was originally thought to have been a sanctuary, however excavations revealed it was a prehistoric necropolis. Other megalithic remains in the region include the Kordin temples situated on the plateau overlooking the Grand Harbour. Out of three temples that formed a complex in ancient times, only one survived, which is Kordin III. Paola is nowadays a commercial centre featuring a shopping complex and a number of shops surrounding it.
