Birgu, also known by its other name Citta Vittoriosa, is a magnificent fortified city in the south part of the Grand Harbour located in Malta’s south east. The locality of Birgu is quite old and its origins date back to the Middle Ages. It is also a very important historical location. It was used as a base for the Order of St. John and was made a capital city between 1530 and 1571. It had a key role in the Great Siege of Malta of 1965.
