Locality: Lija
Lija is a small town in the central region of Malta. It is a part of the Three Villages, alongside Attard and Balzan. What is particularly interesting about Lija is its baroque parish church which is dedicated to Our Saviour. The town has a rich history, which is partly related to Birkirkara, another town in the area. Unlike Birkirkara though, Lija is much quieter, and the peaceful atmosphere is somewhat due to the numerous orchards and gardens situated in the area. Lija’s motto is ‘Suavi Fructu Rubeo’ which translates to ‘with tasty fruit I blossom’. Some of Lija’s most interesting places to visit include Villa Preziosi that dates back to the mid 18 the century as well as the Belveder. The town is mostly known for the lively feasts and fireworks, which are considered to be one of the best in Malta. The fireworks team from Lija even won an international fireworks award in Monaco in the eighties. The town also has its own fireworks factory that won second place in Valletta’s fireworks festival.
